Getting locked out is stressful, but it’s rarely an emergency in the dangerous sense, and a clear head gets you back inside faster. Here’s the order we’d suggest.
Before anything else: is another door or window unlocked? Is there a spare with a neighbor, a family member, or in a lockbox you set up and forgot about? A surprising number of lockouts end right here. Just don’t force a window or climb anything — a sprained ankle is a worse afternoon than a locked door.
If it’s hot, cold, dark, or you’re in an unfamiliar spot, move to a well-lit, visible place — a lobby, a porch, a busy part of a parking lot. If you’re locked out of a car with a child or pet inside and the weather is a concern, treat that as a genuine emergency and call 911 first.
If the reason you’re out is a key that broke off or a lock that seized, don’t jam tools or another key into the keyway — it usually pushes a broken piece deeper and can damage the lock, turning a small job into a bigger one. Leave it and call.
